Richard Tiffany Gere was born on August 31, 1949 and is an American actor who started his career during the 1970’s. It was in the 1980’s however that he rose to fame for his role in the film American Gigolo. It was also for this movie that Gere was established as an outstanding leading man as well as a male sex symbol. In fact, he was hailed “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine in 1999.
Born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, his parents were Doris Anna and Homer George Gere. An excellent gymnast, the American actor went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship majoring in Philosophy. Unfortunately, Gere was unable to finish his schooling.
His first major acting role on stage was in 1973 during London’s original version of Grease. With the release of the film American Gigolo followed by the hit An Officer and a Gentleman, Gere’s career soared. Unfortunately, following movies were not quite as successful until the dawn of 1990 where the actor starred in the movie Pretty Woman co-starring actress Julia Roberts. Since then, Gere appeared in various films including the hit Runaway Bride wherein he once again worked with Julia Roberts. His role in the film Chicago has also earned him the Golden Globe Award as the “Best Actor – Comedy or Musical”.
In 2008, Gere co-starred in the movie Nights in Rodanthe which grossed for over $84 million. However, the film was ranked in the list of London Times Worst Films of 2008.
He married supermodel Cindy Crawford in 1991 and separated after four years. In 2002, Gere then married actress and model Carey Lowell and has a son named Homer James Jiger Gere named after his father.
A great supporter of the Tibetan Independent Movement, the actor is permanently banned from entering China.
