Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Bloom is an English actor best known for his role as the elf-prince Legolas in Lord of the Rings, a movie based from a book trilogy of the same title. Originally, Bloom auditioned for the role of Faramir and was instead chosen for the role of the bow-carrying Legolas.
In 2003, Bloom also played the part of the blacksmith Will Turner in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean which only fueled Bloom’s popularity towards the public.
His popularity soared with People’s magazine naming him one of the Hottest Bachelors in 2004. In the same year, he was ranked among the “50 Most Beautiful” list.
Born on January 13, 1977 at Canterbury, Kent, Bloom has one sister named Samantha. The English actor was named after the 16th century composer Orlando Gibbons and was raised in a Church of England.
Suffering from dyslexia, Bloom managed to get through schooling and was encouraged by his mother to pursue acting. He was already appearing in various television roles and had a small part in the film Wilde before deciding to enter Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Bloom’s success in film has earned him various nominations and awards starting with the first installation of the movie Lord of the Rings, wherein he was nominated as the Cinescape Genre Face of the Year Award. The third installation of the same movie won him the Critics Choice Award. His other movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest also won him the Teen Choice in the category Liplock shared with Keira Knightley.
Aside from being a successful actor, Bloom has also been named as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador on October 2009.
