This Hollywood A-lister is known for his love for eccentric roles, although this has not stopped Depp’s rise to fame. Born on June 9,1963, Depp started out as a young musician before he found his true vocation: acting. He played in garage bands in high school and later dropped out after the principal advised him to follow his dream of being a musician.
Depp was married to Lori Anne Allison, a make-up artist who introduced him to Nicolas Cage, the one who advised Depp to pursue an acting career instead. Soon after his divorce to Allison, he became engaged to actress Sherilyn Fenn whom he met at the set of the 1985 film Dummies. He was also engaged to Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. Her current partner now is Vanessa Paradis, French singer and actress, who also became the mother of his children.
He first achieved relative fame in 21 Jump Street, where his image as a teen idol and heartthrob was established. Concerned about being packaged for roles, Depp made sure that he would only take roles that he felt were right for him. His first major movie role was in the cult classic A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. He later appeared on a short role in Oliver Stone’s Platoon in 1986. The first of his many eccentric roles came out in 1990 when he played the lead character in Edward Scissorhands, which was directed by Tim Burton. This would be the first of a long line of collaborations with the director.
Although known for choosing roles that interested him rather than flicks hat he thought would be hits in the box office, Depp hit the jackpot when he played Captain Jack Sparrow in the hit Disney flick, Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl. Moviegoers loved his portrayal of the character, and Depp garnered an Oscar nomination for his performance. He has also played memorable leading role performances in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as in Finding Neverland.
