Known as one of the sexiest English actors to make it big in American movies, Jason Statham is a martial artist who rose to fame when he starred in the Transporter series. He has relatively spent a shorter time in the limelight compared to other actors in his field, but this has not stopped Statham from working on multiple action movies over the course of several years.
Statham was born on September 12, 1972 in London. One of the reasons for Stathamís buff physique is his swimming and diving roots. He was an Olympic diver for the British National Diving Squad in 1992 while dabbling as a fashion model and shoe salesman. It was actually through French Connection, the modeling agency where he was signed, that he came to audition for his first major movie role in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, directed by Guy Ritchie. He later teamed up with Guy Ritchie again in 2000 for Snatch where he co-starred with Hollywood A-listers as Brad Pitt and Benicio del Torro. He starred in Turn It Up with rapper Ja Rule before doing Ghosts of Mars in 2001.
However, it was his role as Frank Martin as The Transporter that gave Statham the exposure to a larger audience as his own man. Statham was able to show his marital arts skills more openly in this production and he did most of his own stunts, including car chases, scuba diving scenes, and fights.
Statham is open about his acting aspirations and has remarked several times about how he is content with the kind of movies he has done. Although most actors aspire for Academy Awards, Statham is comfortably realistic, saying,
"You ain't ever gonna get an Academy Award for doing Crank and you certainly won't for doing all the other movies I've done."
