His portrayal as Joker in The Dark Night can be considered as one of his most controversial and memorable performances. Heath Ledger was an Australian television and film actor who proved his mettle in his craft even if he left this industry (and this life) too soon. Born on April 4, 1979 in Perth, Western Australia, Heath Ledger was the son of French teacher Sally Ledger and racing-car driver and mining engineer Kim Ledger. He was known to have suffered from toxic combination of prescription drugs and was found lying unconscious on his bed the afternoon of January 22, 2008 in his apartment in Manhattan. The actor died at a young age of 28.
His humble beginnings can be traced back to 1992 when he took a small role in Clowning Around, a television series. Later on, he also played several supporting roles in notable films including The Patriot, alongside Mel Gibson. His other movies include Monster's Ball, Casanova, The Brothers Grimm, and Lords of Dogtown. Because of the unforgettable film Brokeback Mountain, wherein he played a ranch hand who had a love affair with an aspiring rodeo rider, Ledger bagged Best Actor Award in 2005 from the New York Film Critics Circle and San Francisco Film Critics Circle. He also got a nomination for Best Actor for Golden Globe and Academy Awards. At 26, he is the 9th youngest nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
The late Heath Ledger also ventured in the production and direction of music videos. He aspired to become a film director. A very promising actor with a handful of achievements for his age, many felt he was a great loss for the industry. Indeed, this actor is no joker.
