His father, Christopher Ford was a former actor who worked as an advertising executive. Harrison was born to this couple on July 13, 1942 in Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. The Ford-Nidelman union had made Ford a combination of German, Catholic Irish and Soviet Jew in ancestry. The actor makes light of his race and religion.

In Ford’s early attempts in acting, he did not always succeed. In 1964, he even got turned down for voice over roles. His first couple of roles in films in 1966 and 1967 was not even credited.
