Athletes are also celebrities in their own right. There are those that receive more screams than the rest of their fellow athletes. These are the ones who are best remembered because of who they are, what they look like or what they can do. Fabian Hambuechen, a German gymnast, is one of them because of his gymnastic abilities. Born in Bergish Galbach on October 1987, he currently lives in Wetzlar. Fabi, as he is fondly called by family and friends, is a Senior Artistic Gymnast. This means that he has to perform in six apparatuses at every competition. Hambuechen made his mark by first being the youngest athlete representing Germany in the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. During the same Olympics, he already performed brilliantly, finishing seventh in the horizontal bars. As of 2010, he already has five World Championship medals and has a bronze from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics for the high bar event. He has accomplished all of this at only the age of twenty two. With most male gymnasts retiring at about age thirty, Hambuechen still has a chance to add medals to his collection.
The young athlete has already been named German Sportsperson of the Year in 2007, quite an important recognition as there are so many other outstanding athletes coming from Germany. Unfortunately, being an athlete has its ups and downs. Sometimes, it is the body that refuses to perform its best. In the 2009 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, Hambuechen has a good chance to win not only the high bar but also the all-around title but was not able to do so because of a foot injury. Hopefully, he takes this as a temporary setback and continue to be mentally strong for the next competition.
