Starting his acting career at the young age of 19, Antonio's breakthrough role was when he portrayed Ricky in the 1989 movie Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, a mentally unstable patient who was obsessed with a porn star. Despite the controversial nature of this film, it was able to catapult Antonio Banderas into the spotlight.
His foray into the American film industry was successful. In the nineties, Antonio Banderas' talent, charming looks, and seductive Spanish accent landed him roles in high-profile Hollywood films, which included The Mambo Kings (1992) and Desperado (1995).
Born in Andalucia, Spain to Jose Dominguez (a police officer) and Ana Banderas (a schoolteacher), Antonio's first plan was to become a professional football player. However, at 14 years of age, he broke his foot, shattering his dream of playing football as a professional. During his teen years, he went to Madrid to become part of the Spanish film industry.
Aside from acting, Antonio has also directed several films, which include the 1999 film Crazy in Alabama that starred his wife Melanie Griffith. In 2006, he directed Summer Rain (El camino de los ingleses).
Today, Antonio Banderas continues to attract attention worldwide, especially with the release of the Shrek movie series. In this animated movie series, Antonio Banderas portrays the role of the cuddly but well-armed Puss in Boots. In 2005, he got his star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Currently married to Hollywood actress Melanie Griffith, Antonio Banderas is also a known supporter of Andalusian products and the Malaga CF, a Spanish football club.
